Abstract:
Ferroelectric liquid crystals are presented as a simple non-integrable Hamiltonian system. The smectic A-smectic C* phase transition undergoes a Hopf bifurcation. The Poincare sections of the solutions in the smectic C* phase shows the existence of spatially chaotic behavior of the molecular structure depending on temperature and external magnetic field. The smectic C-smectic C* phase transition is also studied as second-order derivative Hamiltonian theory.
